Richard Pryor: The Comedian Who Changed Stand-Up Forever

Listen Later

Richard Pryor was born on December 1, 1940, in Peoria, Illinois. His childhood was far from ordinary. Pryor grew up in a rough environment that would later shape the honesty and depth of his comedy.

His mother worked as a prostitute, and his grandmother ran a brothel where he spent much of his early life. These difficult experiences gave Pryor a perspective on life that was both painful and insightful. Instead of hiding from these realities, he later turned them into some of the most powerful and authentic comedy ever performed on stage.

Pryor often said that humor was a survival tool. His ability to find humor in tragedy and truth in everyday struggle became the foundation of his comedic voice.

During his youth, Pryor had several run-ins with the law and spent time in the U.S. Army. After being discharged, he returned to civilian life and began performing stand-up comedy in the late 1950s.

What started as small performances in clubs soon grew into a revolutionary career that would change the face of comedy forever.
