Like many of you, I started riding on shopping carts at a very young age. We called them buggies. I was around six years old when I started pushing the cart by myself. Until I could navigate the corners, a few cans of soup were destined to roll, but not to worry, I did restack them, so I’m not responsible for the announcement “Cleanup on aisle three.
I especially enjoyed riding a cart through the parking lot. With wide open spaces, I could push really hard, then glide with the breeze on my face. Sometimes I would stand on the smaller end of the cart, then lean, causing the buggy to do a 180 and sling me like a stone in a Roman catapult. So, I probably am responsible for helmet laws today.
I recall one time my father said, “You may enjoy riding on these carts now, but when you are grown, you won’t do it anymore.” I looked up at him and asked, “But what if I still enjoy riding on them?” He said, “You won’t.”
A lot of years have rolled by since my early shopping cart days, but guess what? I still enjoy riding on them, especially in parking lots. I don’t care if people see me, or if no one is around. I do it for one simple reason, it makes me smile. I really enjoy it.
We adults should make time to do some things that make us smile, so dust off that bicycle in the garage and take it for a spin. Go to a lake and skip some rocks. And when was the last time you flew a kite? Live a little, or better yet, live a lot! What do you have to lose, besides stress?
