Riley’s Road - From N332 episodes

  • How Can We Be Expected to Follow Driving Rules Nobody Ever Taught Us?

Why do we expect young people to follow road rules they were never taught?

Spain's driving schools (CNAE) want mandatory training for electric scooters after alarming new safety figures from the Fiscalía and the DGT.

Riley cuts through the statistics to reveal the terrifying everyday experience of riding an unstable scooter alongside aggressive drivers in two-tonne metal boxes, and why practical education must replace easy blame.

  • Have you ever wondered why water feels so harmless, right up until the second it starts moving?

Following the tragic loss of a motorist in Olivella whose car was swept away by a flooded riera, Riley looks past the technical talk to ask the real question: why do smart people still drive into water?

From the psychology of panic to the life-saving rule of "pause and assess", this episode breaks down what actually happens when rising flood water pins your car doors shut, why your windows are your only real way out, and how to spot the Spanish R-100 road sign that tells you a route is completely closed.

Mark has the legal manuals and the mechanical data. Riley has the human reality.

  • The Invisible Weight: Why 30 km/h Is Not a Joke

Inside a modern car, thirty kilometres an hour feels like crawling, and fifty feels completely normal. But out on the tarmac, physics does not care about what feels comfortable. In this episode, Riley breaks down the raw mechanics of urban driving: why doubling your speed does not just double your impact, but squares the destructive kinetic energy packed into your vehicle.

From the terrifying reality of reaction times to why a pedestrian hit at fifty has an eighty per cent chance of severe trauma or death, compared to a ninety per cent survival rate at thirty, this is an honest look at the invisible responsibility sitting in your hands every time you turn the key. No preaching, no lectures—just the hard facts on peer pressure, passenger noise, and why that twenty-kilometre-an-hour difference is the entire line between walking away and never going home.

  • Thirty for a Reason: Why I Am Not Speeding Through Town for Anyone

We have all been there. You are running late, your mates in the back are telling you to put your foot down, and thirty kilometres an hour feels like crawling.

    Let them talk.

When you hit someone at 50 km/h, the chance of that person dying or suffering permanent trauma is roughly eighty per cent. Drop that speed down to 30 km/h, and their survival rate shoots up to ninety per cent.

Your friends are not the ones who have to live with the consequences of an impact. You are holding the wheel. Drop the speed, watch the crossings, and get everyone home in one piece.

"At fifty kilometres an hour, a pedestrian has an eight in ten chance of dying. At thirty, their survival rate jumps to ninety per cent."

  • Why Lower Speed Limits Aren't About the Cameras

Every time authorities drop a speed limit or put up a new section radar, the conversation immediately turns to fines, revenue traps, and ruined journeys.

But what happens when you take the politics and the police vans out of the equation?

In this episode, Riley unpacks the latest push from European transport safety bodies demanding stricter speed enforcement, and explains why the math behind kinetic energy actually matters.

More importantly, she looks at where real control truly lives: not in the speed traps, but directly under your right foot.

If we want fewer friends ending up in emergency rooms, the decision starts and ends with us.

  • Riley Goes Back on the School Run

Have you ever wondered why the five minutes outside the school gates feel more dangerous than driving on a highway?

In this episode, Riley breaks down the real risks of the morning school run—and why the biggest hazard is not speed, but unpredictability. From the trap of treating five-minute local trips like they do not matter, to the pavement-side rule and what the Dirección General de Tráfico actually requires for child restraints in Spain, we look past the traffic jams and examine the habits we model every single morning.

Mark has the technical data, but what are children actually seeing when we lose patience at the wheel?

Tune in to find out how changing one small routine two streets away can keep everyone safe.

  • New Road Rules Are Coming in Spain

October is bringing some big changes to road safety in Spain— and if you cycle, ride a scooter, use a motorbike or moped, drive a car, or simply walk around town, some of them could affect you.

In this episode, I break down the changes coming from 1October 2026, including helmets, protective clothing, overtaking cyclists, emergency corridors, VMP rules, seat belts and more.

And there is one important thing to remember...

Not everything starts on 1 October 2026.

Some requirements have transition periods, with importantchanges continuing into 2027.

    No legal jargon.

    No giant rulebook.

Just the things you actually need to know.

Because knowing the rules is good.

Understanding why they exist is even better.

    Be safe.

  • Have you ever wondered why we feel so untouchable when we drive?

Over one million vehicles checked in a single week. More than 69,000 drivers reported. Nineteen facing court for extreme speeding.

In this episode, Riley breaks down the August campaign figures from the Dirección General de Tráfico and looks at the real cost of driving faster. Modern cars have evolved, but human biology has not. Why does higher speed strip away our time to react, stop, and prevent collisions? Why is that a physical limit that no amount of driving skill can overcome?

Let us look at the numbers, the science, and what happens when confidence meets human biology.

  • What you wear when you ride could make a much bigger difference than you think

What you wear when you ride could make a much bigger difference than you think.

In this episode, I explain why I created my latest road safety video about appropriate clothing for motorbikes, mopeds and electric scooters. It is easy to think that shorts, a vest top and trainers are fine when the weather is hot, especially if you are only travelling a short distance.

But when something goes wrong, your body reacts instinctively. Your hands, feet, knees and elbows can all move towards the road, and suddenly the protection you thought you had is no longer between you and the tarmac.

We talk about appropriate clothing, footwear, gloves and approved helmets, and why protecting yourself is about much more than simply following the rules.

I also explain how the video was filmed under controlled conditions, why it is available in both English and Spanish, and what is coming next in the campaign.

And yes... there is even a little humour at the end.
