There is never a break from controversy when it comes to the NFL, and this week featured Cam Newton.  During a press conference, Cam responded to a question about Devin Funchess’ route running from reporter Jourdan Rodrigue with “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. … It’s just funny.”  

In the fallout over this comment, the narrative has been that his words are sexist and degrading to women.  Subsequently, Dannon yogurt pulled a sponsorship deal from Cam.  The incident also dug up history on Rodrigue, prompting her to release an apology for an offensive twitter comment she made in 2013.  On Thursday, Newton issued a public apology to all women for his comments.

LB, Jeremey Cash has reached an injury settlement with the Carolina Panthers.  Cash has been saddled with a calf injury that had him on the injured reserve after missing 2 straight games.  Upon his release from the injured reserve on October 3rd, he is free to sign with any team as a free agent.

Panthers sign safety Jairus Byrd.  Byrd is being brought into shore up the defense after Kurt Coleman suffered a sprained MCL against the Patriots.  He was a 3 time pro-bowler with Buffalo before moving to New Orleans, who released him this past March.  Byrd will the place of another Byrd on the Panthers’ roster; WR, Damiere Byrd was placed on the injured reserve after breaking his arm in the win over the Patriots.

The Panthers also signed Safety Dezmen Southward from the practice squad this week and signed LB Zeek Bigger to the practice squad.

A few Panthers received awards this week.  

Julius Peppers won his 7th Defensive Player of the Week for his performance at Foxboro where he sacked Tom Brady twice.

Luke Kuechly was named to Pro Football Focus’ 1st-quarter all pro team.

The injury list justs keeps getting longer for the Panthers.  I already mention ed that Jeremey Cash was released from IR.  Daeshon Hall, Knee, and Damiere Byrd, arm have been placed on injured reserve. Kurt Coleman, Knee, Demetrious Cox, Ankle, and Ryan Kalil, Neck, are all out against Detroit this Sunday.  Mario Addison, Knee, Matt Kalil, groin, and Julius Peppers, Shoulder, are all listed as questionable.  Kelvin Benjamin has been limited participation in practice all week long for his minor knee issue, but is expected to play.
