Who is Jesus? In John 11, Jesus makes one of his most powerful claims: “I am the resurrection and the life.” And then, standing outside the tomb of a man who had been dead for four days, Jesus demonstrates exactly what that means.The raising of Lazarus reveals both the compassion and the incredible power of Jesus. He weeps with those who mourn, calls Lazarus out of the grave, and shows that even death is subject to his authority. Jesus offers more than help for this life—he offers the promise of eternal life to everyone who believes in him.But the story of Lazarus also points forward to the cross and the empty tomb. Jesus gives life to Lazarus, and the fallout from that miracle moves the religious leaders toward putting Jesus to death. Ultimately, Jesus would give his own life so that sinners who were dead in their sins could live. And because Jesus rose from the dead, everyone who trusts in him has the hope of resurrection and eternal life.Who is Jesus?
