The Gross Gambling income being generated in the past year is R47 billion in the past financial year and represents 37% increase from April 2023 to March 2024. This is largely due to betting and gaming companies expanding their online presence and the gambling activities on offer.
Due to this move, they are capturing a young audience (18-34 years old) who spend more time on their phones than at a casino. According to an InfoQuest survey taken earlier this year, young people engaged in gambling activities at least 11 times a month (on average).
Gambling may be seen as recreational, addiction is not far behind and has posed a major challenge in society. Many people see gambling as an income stream as 39% of gamblers use their winnings to bet again. According to the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, there have been 2661 referrals for gambling addition in the previous fiscal cycle.
