In this episode of Black Power Moves, part of the Ebony Covering Black America Podcast Network, we're speaking to Renika Atkins, Founder and Principal Consultant of Atkins Powerhouse Consulting. https://atkinspowerhouse.com/As a foster alumni with a Masters in Social Work in the Healthcare IT industry, she chose to make an impact on social issues and find ways to increase healthcare technology literacy.
But her journey hasn’t been easy. She was born addicted to crack/cocaine and placed in the system at birth. In the United States, only 3% of foster alumni graduate with a 4-year degree, even less hold a master’s degree. She fights stigmas by representing the 3-5% of women of color who are employed in technology.
Through her nonprofit, Resources Inspiring Success and Empowering (RISE), she works to bridge the disparity gap between transitioning youth and young adults and their community through education, mentoring, outreach, and advocacy. RISE is the first organization that has STEM educational programming specifically designed for girls in foster care.
