  • I Didn’t Know How to Explain What Was Going On

From the outside, Elliot Kay had a lot to be grateful for. He had a successful business an amazing family and on paper, life looked good. Yet inside, he was struggling with depression, constantly feeling that he wasn’t good enough.

In this episode, Elliot shares what it was like to struggle with his mental health while finding it difficult to understand, let alone explain, what he was experiencing. He opens up about reaching a point where he had thoughts of suicide, the moment he realised he needed help, and how talking to someone helped him begin to see things differently.

His story is a reminder that you don't have to wait until you reach breaking point to ask for help, and that struggling doesn't mean you've failed. Sometimes, the hardest part is admitting that something isn't right and finding the words to tell someone.

In this episode, we talk about:

    - What depression can look like when, from the outside, everything seems to be going well.

    - The pressure of feeling that you're never doing enough or achieving enough.

    - How difficult it can be to explain what you're experiencing, even to the people closest to you.

    - The importance of asking for help and recognising when you need support.

    - Letting go of other people's expectations and finding your own sense of purpose.

    - Learning to accept where you are and recognising that you don't have to have everything figured out.

If you've ever felt that you should be happier, more successful or further ahead than you are, Elliot's story may help you recognise that you're not alone.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Elliot

Elliot Kay is a keynote speaker, entrepreneur, seven-time author and speaker coach who believes we don’t always need clarity before we act — sometimes clarity is something we create through action.

Over more than two decades in business, Elliot has built companies, experienced failure and bankruptcy, reinvented himself and learned what it means to keep moving when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

Despite being dyslexic, he has become a seven-time author and experienced keynote speaker, helping entrepreneurs, leaders and professional speakers communicate powerfully, grow their businesses and step onto bigger stages.

His Watch Me Go philosophy explores what happens when we stop waiting to feel ready and instead take intelligent action, create evidence and discover what we’re capable of.

Warm, funny and refreshingly open about success and failure, Elliot speaks about entrepreneurship, confidence, identity, influence and taking action without certainty.

  • I Was Told What My Future Would Look Like. I Decided Otherwise.

What do you do when you’ve spent years being told what is going to happen to your body, your health and your future?

In this episode, I’m joined by Sue Woodriffe who has spent much of her life dealing with pain, injury, trauma and some pretty frightening predictions about what her future might look like.

At just 12 years old, Sue injured her knee in a trampoline accident. What followed was years of operations, chronic pain and decisions being made for her. At one point, she was even told she could be in a wheelchair by the age of 40.

Sue talks openly about how those experiences affected her, from feeling that she had no choice and no voice, to becoming fiercely determined to maintain her independence and mobility.

Sue shares what she has learned about trauma, resilience, taking responsibility for your wellbeing and why she believes that, whatever happens to you, you can still have a good life.

Because sometimes the biggest thing you can find after everything you’ve been through is your voice.

And with your voice comes a choice.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Sue

At the age of 12, a serious accident set in motion a succession of traumatic experiences, culminating in the death of her mother when she was 25.

The accident and its aftermath resulted in a lifelong physical disability, introducing Sue to challenges that many people spend a lifetime trying to avoid, including pain, loss, uncertainty and the need to adapt to circumstances beyond her control.

Later experiences of grief, chronic pain and significant life transitions deepened her understanding of how trauma can affect both mind and body.

Alongside these challenges, Sue has built a full and rewarding life. She married, raised two wonderful sons, ran a successful business with her husband for many years and now enjoys being grandmother to two grandsons.

These experiences inspired Sue to support others who are struggling in life, particularly when trauma underlies the emotions and beliefs that shape their lives.

  • I Didn’t Choose My Struggles. I Chose What I Did With Them

What do you do when the struggles you’ve carried for years start to feel like they’re becoming who you are?

In this episode of Rising From The Rubble, I’m joined by Nick Elston, an inspirational speaker who shares his lived experience of OCD, anxiety, burnout and the journey that ultimately led him to build a career around helping others.

Nick talks openly about what it was like to spend years being labelled a “worrier” and “sensitive”, while carrying far more than the people around him realised. He shares the moment in 2012 when he finally stopped pretending he was fine and told people what was really going on.

We talk about the masks we wear, the stories we tell ourselves, the thoughts we believe, and why we can’t always control what happens to us, yet we do have a choice about what we do next.

Nick also shares how he learned to challenge his anxiety, why he tells people to “fact check” their thoughts, and how the experiences that once felt like they might break him ultimately helped forge the person he is today.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, stuck, defined by your past, or unsure whether you have a choice, this conversation is for you.

Because you may not have chosen your struggles.

You can choose what you do with them.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Nick

Nick Elston is an award-winning mental health and keynote speaker, speaking coach, and the founder of Forging People.

After years of living with anxiety and being an introvert himself, Nick built a career speaking to audiences of thousands around the world, turning what once held him back into the very thing that now drives his impact.

With twelve years of experience as a speaker rooted in lived experience, Nick helps people find their voice, own their story, and communicate with genuine confidence, clarity and impact, whether that is on a stage, in a boardroom, or in a conversation that matters.

His work is built around one simple belief: people already have the answers they need, they just need better questions to access them.

Nick works across corporates, education, frontline services and beyond, and hosts his own weekly country music show, Nick Elston Country, on Mixx Radio.

Yet deep down, something didn’t feel right.

Anna shares what happened when she finally faced that truth, the emotions that followed, and how she rebuilt her life.

  • Your mind is Lying to You

And the scary part is, most of the time, you believe it.

In this episode, I talk about the stories we tell ourselves when things don’t go to plan, and how quickly those stories can shape what happens next.

Because it’s rarely the situation itself that keeps you stuck. It’s the meaning you attach to it.

A missed opportunity, a rejection or a delay, on their own, they mean nothing.

Yet the way you interpret them can change how you feel, how you respond, and the direction you take from there.

If you’ve ever found yourself overthinking, doubting yourself, or convincing yourself something isn’t possible, this episode will make you look at that differently.

  • You Live Like the Person You Believe You Are

You live like the person you believe you are.

And most people don’t realise how true that is.

In this episode, I talk about why there can be a gap between what you say you want and how your life actually looks.

Because it’s rarely about effort. And it’s rarely about knowing more.

Something else is going on underneath that most people miss.

And it shows up in how you think, how you act, and what you allow yourself to follow through on.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing the right things and still not getting the result you want, this episode will make you stop and look again.

Because the answer is not where most people think it is.

  • Three Reasons You're Not Getting What You Want

    You know what you want.

At least, you think you do.

You want more freedom, more confidence, and more control over your life. You want things to feel different from how they do right now.

So why hasn’t it happened yet?

In this episode, I’m sharing the three things that often sit between where you are and where you want to be. They’re easy to miss because they’re not what you’d write on a to-do list, yet they influence every decision you make.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I know what I want, so why am I not getting there?”, this episode is for you.

The truth is, the thing that’s holding you back isn’t a lack of knowledge; it’s something much closer to home.

  • This Is Why Small Things Blow Up

Most of the stress people carry isn’t coming from what actually happened. It’s coming from what they made it mean.

In this episode, I break down why small moments, like a short email, a blunt message, a tone you can’t quite read, can take over your whole day.

You see, it’s rarely the situation itself that’s the problem. It’s the story that gets built around it.

We’ve all experienced it: a situation that could have been contained, which then becomes something bigger than it should. And that’s because we start making assumptions, we lose the ability to communicate clearly, and we allow our emotions to take the lead.

In this episode, I share a practical framework to change that. A way of stepping out of the emotional spiral so you can look at the situation differently.

Because when you only see one version of events, you react. When you widen the lens, you respond differently.

If you often find yourself replaying conversations, overthinking messages, or dwelling on things longer than they need to, this episode will give you a way to break that cycle.

  • Loneliness Is the Cost of Being ‘Strong’ All the Time

If you keep holding it together… eventually, something will break.

In this episode, I’m talking to Anneli Johansson about what happens when you spend your life being the strong one — and the loneliness that comes with it.

Anneli shares how a moment from her childhood shaped the way she showed up in the world. Always capable. Always smiling. Always the one others could rely on. On the outside, everything looked fine. On the inside, she was exhausted, disconnected, and slowly losing herself.

We talk about how burnout really happens — not all at once, more like a slow build over time. The pressure. The silence. The belief that you have to handle everything on your own.

And then, the moment that changed everything. A simple hug that broke through the mask and forced her to face what she’d been avoiding for years.

We get into what it actually takes to rebuild from that point. Asking for help. Letting go of who you thought you had to be. Learning how to be, not just do.

If you’ve ever felt like you have to keep going, even when everything in you is saying stop, this one will hit home.

Because being strong all the time comes at a cost.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Anneli

Anneli Johansson is a midlife reinvention coach, bestselling author, and speaker who helps professionals reconnect with themselves and create lives that feel as good as they look.

Her work is grounded in one core belief: real change begins when we pause long enough to listen to the truth we’ve been avoiding.

Shaped by her own journey of reinvention and resilience, Anneli brings a coaching approach that is direct, honest, and focused on practical transformation. She supports individuals who are ready to reset their direction, reconnect with their values, and move forward with clarity and intention.

Blending positive energy with grounded insight, she creates a space where growth feels both safe and challenging.

At the heart of all what she does is a simple mission, which is to make the world a little brighter, one small step / person at a time.

  • You Always Have a Choice… Even When It Costs You Everything

If you keep ignoring what doesn’t feel right… eventually, you won’t be able to ignore it anymore.

In this episode, I’m talking to Cassie Watts about what happens when the life you’ve always known stops feeling like your own — and the courage it takes to walk away.

Cassie was born into a high-demand religion. It shaped everything: her beliefs, her choices, her community, and her identity. On the outside, life looked good. She was surrounded by people, supported, and doing all the “right” things.

Until something didn’t sit right anymore.

We talk about the build-up of doubt, the moment she realised she couldn’t continue, and what it really takes to leave — not just a belief system, but a whole way of living. Including the impact on family, identity, and starting again from scratch.

This is a conversation about people-pleasing, alignment, and learning to trust yourself, even when it changes everything.

If you’ve ever felt disconnected, stuck in a life that looks fine on the outside, or unsure what to do next… this episode will show you that you always have a choice.

Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play.

    About Cassie

Cassie Watts is a Self-Leadership Coach who helps leaders and parents create cultures of belonging at home and at work — places where no one has to lose themselves in order to succeed or be loved.

Her work focuses on the inner patterns that shape how we lead, parent, and relate to others. Many of the people Cassie works with are capable, thoughtful professionals who hold a lot of responsibility, yet feel the pressure to keep proving, performing, or holding everything together.

Focusing on body and mind practises, Cassie helps people recognise the unconscious habits of over-responsibility, perfectionism, and self-criticism that drive burnout and disconnection. From there, they learn to lead themselves with more awareness, honesty, and compassion.

Known for her warm, grounded style and refreshingly human conversations, Cassie helps people become more emotionally available parents, partners, and leaders — creating environments where belonging, trust, and genuine connection can thrive.
