LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS
- There has been a trend toward less siloed organizations and more toward a more integrated work environment and world.
- Leading in an integrated world is different than leading in a siloed world. In other words, “what got you here won’t get you there.”
- Leading in an integrated world during crisis is even more difficult and must maintain optimal functioning. The skills are as important as ever, but the opportunity is greater for those who have the skills.
- The crisis has also created extraordinary opportunity to strengthen cohesion and build trust on teams.
- Leaders must have the humility to understand they need to lead themselves effectively before leading others (including nervous system and mental and emotional well-being).
- Be an inspirational leader by embodying the optimism and balance you want others to have, holding boundaries for others, showing empathy, probe one or two questions deeper, and give positive feedback—catch people doing good things and highlight them.
QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION
- What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Change will never happen as slowly as it is today. Learning, agility, and reflection are vital for our future.
- Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Compassionate, decisive, and collaborative.
- What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? What does the group of people I’m working with know that I don’t know, and what are they better at than me?
- What book would you recommend to leaders? Leading in the Global Matrix: Proven Skills and Strategies to Succeed in a Collaborative World by John Futterknecht and Marty Seldman
- If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Ensure that you include movement in your day
- As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why not?” Be bold within reason. You may either be wrong or be slow. Lean in.
