Risk vs Reward — it’s something you juggle everyday especially if you’re an entrepreneur. Is what you’re about to do worth the risk, or are your emotional warning signs — fear, doubt, lack of confidence — indications to step back into the (perceived) safety of your comfort zone?
These are mechanisms that are entrained in our DNA through millions of years if evolution. Designed to ensure survival, this programming is largely obsolete since basic survival (generally speaking) is all but ensured. This survival mechanism remains however and is expressed in social and emotional realms.
Bad news for entrepreneurs because this means we innately resist stepping out of the accepted societal norms.
We also have a part of our hardwiring that is curious and inquisitive. We have a natural proclivity to ask deep questions and seek meaning. This is the part of us that opens to creativity and exploration.
The balance I find is in knowing that growth and creation lie beyond my comfort zone and that there is no growth, no discovery without risk.
So be willing take a step into the unknown. You’ll be amazed what you’ll discover there.
