A national examination body discovers that the people writing its high-stakes exam papers have been working somewhere IT never approved, and never knew about. Nobody involved thought they were doing anything wrong. From that story, Adam and Peter ask why so many organisations reach for control first, who actually decides which technology gets used these days, and whether AI is really a new problem or an old one moving much faster. Along the way they share stories from Microsoft and from the IT departments that found out too late. If your organisation is asking how to control AI, this episode asks whether that is the right place to begin.

Risk Worth Taking starts from one idea: AI isn’t creating new organisational weaknesses, it is exposing the ones that were already there, faster. Adam Johnson and Peter Barnes explore what that means for ownership, trust and decision-making, and why understanding has to come before control.

Everyone is asking how to control AI. Adam and Peter think that may be the wrong question. In this opening conversation, two hosts from very different backgrounds explain why they keep reaching the same conclusions. Along the way they trade stories about the client who insists their organisation is unique, wonder why an AI discussion always ends up being about people, and ask whether technology was ever really the subject. If you want to know what this series is about, and why the answer may not be what you expect, start here.

Risk Worth Taking explores what AI exposes inside organisations, from control and ownership to trust and leadership, through conversations with the people who run them.

Risk Worth Taking is a podcast about organisations, technology, and what happens when change arrives faster than expected. It is hosted by Adam Johnson and Peter Barnes, two practitioners who work…
Most organisations begin with the question of how to control AI. By the time that conversation starts, people are already using it, and most of them are trying to create value rather than risk. Adam and Peter start from a different question: what is actually happening inside the organisation?
Their conversations often begin with AI and quickly move to trust, ownership, accountability, and leadership. When an organisation says it has an AI problem, it frequently has a trust problem, an ownership problem, or a decision-making problem that AI has simply made visible. AI does not create new organisational weaknesses. It forces existing ones into the open, and it does so faster than before.
Each episode is an unscripted, practitioner-led discussion of the decisions leaders face as technology moves faster than the organisation can adapt. The aim is to help executives and transformation leaders make AI decisions that they can actually defend.
Understanding comes before control. Welcome to Risk Worth Taking.
