Members Reviews:
Written in the form seemingly like a diary
Written in the form seemingly like a diary, this book tells the story of a woman's grandmother who, during World War II, rescued downed allied airmen in France and helped them reach safety. It is also the story of how the author sought the details behind her grandmother's war time efforts, despite the fact that many French people did not want to remember or think about those dark days during the war. By way of reaching out to the American survivors who were helped by the grandmother, the author was able to piece together the story which she eventually wrote and published. In the process, the author developed, in her own right, a great appreciation of what her grandmother achieved in aiding the airmen, but also an appreciation of the efforts of the allies who came to the French in defeating Hitler's armies.
A Refreshing and Unique Historical Perspective. Recommended!
A wonderful story about the brave men and women that stood up to the Nazi occupation of France during WWII. These people risked everything to help downed allied airmen avoid capture and their stories need to be told.
I particularly enjoyed the unique connection of past and presentâfamily of today learning of the deeds of their parents and grandparents. It is too easy to forget the strengths of our roots and the accomplishments and sacrifices of our forbearers. This book works to bridge that gap and reminds us all to look to the past to understand more of ourselves today.
Well crafted, pleasant to read.
The story entertains and educates as it unfolds.
The exploits of French Resistance are from another era and like much of the history of the Second World War, they are receding into the mists of the past. Nevertheless, Marie Le Febre, like a detective, follows a trail of clues to learn the truth about her family's involvement in those perilous times. As she slowly discovers a part of her family's past she had never known, she makes their past come to life in the reader's eyes and shows how the extraordinary actions of ordinary people can truly make a difference in their lives and in the lives of others.
A very good account of what it was like to be living ...
A very good account of what it was like to be living in occupied territory during WWII. The author provides lots of context, both of the times during and after the war, to make the story more meaningful. Many French citizens risked everything to resist the German occupation and to aid downed allied airmen. The author takes the reader along on her own journey of discovery regarding her grandparents activities during WWII.
