The major ZKM exhibition global aCtIVISm will be accompanied by a symposium in the ZKM_Lecture Hall from January 24–26, 2014. Thirty participants from all over the world — researchers, artists, and activists — will meet to discuss how the form and sociopolitical significance of civic engagement has evolved in the twenty-first century influenced by contemporary fine arts, communication media tools, and the continually expanding potential and threats of the Internet. Developments in society and media have radically redefined the role of the citizen, who today finds herself as an actor in a “performative democracy.”

The symposium will be divided into two sections: an interdisciplinary conference from January 24–25, and an activist summit on January 26. On the anniversary of the Egyptian revolution on January 25, the Egyptian artist activists Ganzeer and Ammar Abo Bakr will be present for a screening of Marco Wilms’ 2013 documentary ART WAR.
