Riverfront Talks: Substance Matters

Riverfront Talks: Substance Matters Episode 10

Listen Later

Episode 10 continues with special guest Jewell Gardner.

Jewell discusses the mental health struggles that she personally faced, and how
she realized the need for self-care in order to continue to effectively support
her son. She then tells Tiffany about the realization that her youngest son was
also beginning to experience mental health challenges, just as her oldest son
began to experience a new challenge of substance use. She details the
progression of her son’s opioid use disorder, the stage of helplessness and
vulnerability that she and her son feel as he continues to still struggle, and
the criteria for involuntary commitment (IVC). She concludes with her “WHY” as
a parent and clinician, her hopes for her son, and why she feels it’s important
for her to tell her son’s story from her perspective.
