What does it really mean to be blessed?

In Matthew 5:1–12, Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount by describing the people who belong to His kingdom—and they look nothing like the world’s picture of success.

In this episode, we explain the Beatitudes, including what Jesus meant by “poor in spirit,” meek, merciful, pure in heart, and persecuted for righteousness. We’ll discover why the Beatitudes are not eight steps for earning salvation, but a portrait of the character Jesus produces in those who follow Him.

Just as an experienced fisherman knows that appearances rarely tell the whole story, Jesus sees faith, humility, and spiritual depth where the world may see weakness.

The world may overlook that kind of life. The King never will.

Word was spreading throughout the region: Jesus was teaching with authority, proclaiming the arrival of God’s kingdom, and healing people no one else could help. Soon, crowds were traveling from every direction to find Him.

In this episode, we explore Matthew 4:23–25 and discover what Jesus’ miracles reveal about His kingdom, why following in the crowd is different from becoming a disciple, and what His healing ministry means when our own prayers for healing seem unanswered.

Why did Jesus choose fishermen to become His first disciples?

Good anglers don’t choose a lure at random. They study the water, consider the conditions, and select something suited for the task ahead. In Matthew 4:18–22, Jesus does some choosing of His own—but instead of recruiting religious scholars or powerful leaders, He calls four ordinary fishermen.

In this episode of Riverside, we explore what Jesus saw in Peter, Andrew, James, and John, why He told them He would make them “fish for people,” and what their immediate response teaches us about discipleship. We’ll also consider how Jesus can take the gifts, experiences, and abilities already present in our lives and redirect them toward His kingdom.

You may feel ordinary or unqualified, but Jesus doesn’t call only finished people. He calls us to follow—and then shapes us into people who can serve His mission.

Immediately after His baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness—where He fasts for forty days and comes face-to-face with Satan.

But why?

Why did Jesus need to be tempted? Why does Satan begin with, “If you are the Son of God”? Why does Jesus answer every temptation from Deuteronomy? And what does any of this have to do with Israel's forty years in the wilderness?

Joseph obeys God's warning and escapes to Egypt with Mary and Jesus. But in Bethlehem, innocent children are killed at the hands of King Herod.

Why did God warn Joseph...
but not the other families?
It's a difficult question—and Matthew doesn't give us an easy answer.

Instead, we're reminded that even when evil seems to prevail, God's purposes are never defeated. Joseph's quiet obedience, God's faithful provision, and the hope found in Christ point us to a truth we desperately need: tragedy never has the final word.

Why do I keep coming back to small creeks?

Some of the hardest lessons in fishing happen beneath the surface.

When you're fishing a jig or a Texas rig, you can't see your lure. You have to learn to trust that it's doing what it's supposed to do, even when you can't watch it. That confidence only comes with time.

Joseph faced a similar challenge.
