In tattooing there exists ghosts. Phantoms,. Tattooers that shun the spotlight and all the trappings and stress of our instaworld. Rather than live in a matrix of virtual platitudes, they choose the tangible, the visceral. They choose to revel in the day in day out grind.
While Rob Hope shies away from the spotlight his ability and singleminded focus in tattooing draws us in. It's this truth, this truth to his process and life that makes him so special to those that know him. He toils away in quiet, never looking for our praise or accolades. It's refreshing.
Shawn and I catch up with our old friend. We share laughs and stories, and talk about what a lifetime of tattooing brings. Memories. Don't sleep on this guy. Look at his work and then look again. It's easy to miss, but it's all there, everything a good tattoo can be and even more.
Rob tattoos out of his private studio in Maple Ridge BC. You can check out the rare piece he might post @robhopetattoos. But don't expect to see posts every day or week, or month even. He's out living a great life, focused on the process.
