In which a young man, newly estranged from paternal support, embarks upon a solitary journey along the somewhat dreary northern roads of England, his mind a medley of hope, pride, and melancholy reflections. His solitude is broken by a travel companion whose nervous fears of highwaymen provide both amusement and a curious commentary on the times, whilst revealing the uneasy mixture of civility and danger that dwells along the public highways.
