Robert Liston, the 'fastest knife in West End,' was an early surgical innovator who developed new techniques and equipment in surgery. He trained many surgeons and was the first surgeon to perform surgery on a patient who'd received modern anesthesia. Despite these accomplishments, he's remembered primarily for a likely apocryphal tale of a surgery he performed with a 300% mortality rate.
