. I was named “Roberta” after legendary music icon - Roberta Flack. I’m from the Zulu tribe in South Africa. From my age, it’s easy to see that I grew up under the apartheid system, which ended when I was 18 years old. I grew up in a township (the “hood” as known in America). We lived what we considered African values - it takes a village to raise a child (every adult is your parent), we shared sugar, rice and other little food items if we ran out because apartheid created a system where shops for Black people were way too far. RESPECT is the number 1 principle in the Zulu culture.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Business Management and Transportation Economics. More than a decade was spent in corporate South Africa (8 years in consulting engineering and the rest in corporate finance and management consulting). The corporate environment was a huge eye-opener for me. Those who climbed the ladder were not necessarily the smartest guys in the boardroom - but the ones who had better people and soft skills. The most brilliant guy in the cubicle may have been paid well, but he didn’t rise up to Director of a division because the higher you go, the less technical the work but the more management of project teams.

The world is moving back to old-fashioned values that shaped us as humanity. Therefore, these ideas may seem new and groundbreaking, but they have always been part of African culture.
