It’s safe to say that I love music apps on my iPad. Being a musician, you never know when you want to break out in song, or put a quick composition together. So when I heard about Rockmate, I was pretty excited – not only could I make music with it, I could get my friends around the iPad and help out with songs.

Rockmate is like having a room dedicated for music. There are four stations on Rockmate – 2 guitars, 1 keyboard and 1 set of drums. In the middle is the controls. tap on the drums and get a beat going. tap on the keys to get a melody. The guitars supply a rhythm and chord progression.

You can customize each instrument. From guitar sounds, to different drumsets. On the keyboard you can have a piano, flute, sax, or other instrument.

The metronome keeps the time. Hit the record button and let your masterpiece happen. You can even record loops to keep you in time with the drums.

When you are done, you can stitch sounds together, or just play the parts separately.

One problem I had with it – there was a way to input a vocal or instrument. However, when I plugged in a mic, I couldn’t get the app to respond. I checked with my other music apps, and I had no problems. Might be a small glitch – I’ll let them know.

If you are a pro musician, it might be a little frustrating as the audio engine starts to lag a bit. But if you are looking for something to put down basic ideas, this might be a great app to have in your iPad.

Rockmate by Fingerlab is $2.99 and available in the app store.
