Role of Election Observer and Missions during the election process

With just a few hours away from the 2024 elections, we thought to talk to some of the election observers about their mandate and also about the work they do. Since the dawn of democracy, South African elections have always been deemed free and fair. This year however, there has been a lot of talk in the media about bringing in election observers from different countries. Just why are election observers important and what is it they look for in making sure that an election is free and fair? What are the characteristics of an ideal observer?
