As a single parent, you are pulling double duty, wearing many hats, keeping many balls up in the air, spinning many plates, and wearing both the pants and the skirt of the family. Forget about personal pronouns, YOU ARE pronounced both the male and the female of your household because you hold it all together.
Unlike the first time your baby was placed in your arms and in a flip of a switch you just kind of figured out or assumed your mom's role, the role of becoming a double-duty parent doesn’t. It doesn’t become you because it isn’t supposed to be you. It’s awkward, frustrating, perplexing, and uncomfortable trying to fulfill a role that is not yours and, well truth be told, it wasn’t gently placed in your arms either, it was kind of dropped there.
Now in time mind you, as you are forced to assume both the role of dad and mom simultaneously, somehow it does become part of your DNA as if your brain is rewired. In most cases without you even noticing, that switch does eventually get flipped on.
The challenge is knowing when you need to turn it off.
