Rolling the Dice on Community: How Game Night Games is Changing Pueblo

Listen Later

In this episode of Elevate Everyone, host Freddie Martinez sits down with Brian Montez, owner of Game Night Games in Pueblo, Colorado — a local board game store that’s become so much more than just a place to buy cards and dice. It’s become a hub of belonging, connection, and transformation.

Brian shares his journey of building a space where people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels feel welcome. From casual learners to national competitors, Game Night Games has grown into a community where strategy meets friendship and where players become family.

What started as a personal passion — sparked by grief and fueled by purpose — has turned into a growing cultural movement in Pueblo. Whether you’re 10 or 70, into Pokémon or war simulations, Brian’s store has become a safe space where everyone can sit at the same table.

  • Brian’s personal journey from loss to leadership — and how Game Night Games began

  • The difference between community-based gaming and isolated screen-based gaming

  • Why conflict in games teaches real-life problem-solving

  • How Game Night Games balances casual play with serious tournament-level competition

  • What makes Pueblo’s gaming scene unique — and how it’s gaining state recognition

  • How local players are representing Pueblo at major events across the country

  • What it’s really like running a retail store in today’s market

  • The behind-the-scenes challenges of product shortages, tariffs, and community-building

  • How collaboration with other stores across Colorado is helping elevate the entire gaming scene

  • Community over competition

Game Night Games is a place where players don’t just show up to win — they show up to belong.

  • Generations at the table

From kids learning Pokémon to retirees connecting over war games, Brian has built a space where age, skill, and background don’t matter — the love of gaming does.

  • Problem-solving through play

Brian explains how board games help develop critical thinking, emotional maturity, and social skills in both kids and adults.

  • Pueblo pride

With players traveling to national tournaments — and others coming to Pueblo for events — the local gaming scene is gaining serious momentum.

Located in Sunset Plaza in Pueblo, Game Night Games is a retail and play space for tabletop games, TCGs (Trading Card Games), miniatures, RPGs, and more. They host weekly events, regional qualifiers, learn-to-play sessions, and serve as a welcoming hub for everyone from first-time players to competitive pros.

Brian and his team have intentionally created a store that’s:

  • Family-friendly

  • Educator-supported

  • Beginner-welcoming

  • Inclusive to all backgrounds, identities, and ages
