Paul’s People (Israel)

They Are Unsaved

  • Note Paul’s longing and plea
    • Romans 10:1, Romans 9:1-2
    • Salvation for his people
    • They Are Passionate But Unenlightened

      • Philippians 3:4-7
        • Paul knows what it’s like to be passionate but unenlightened
        • Romans 10:2 – “they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge”
          • Zeal = zēlos (Greek: ζῆλος) – literally: “Hot”. Figuratively: excitement of mind, ardour, fervour of spirit
          • They developed their own way instead of yielding to God’s

            • Romans 10:3
              • Submitted themselves = hypotassō (Greek: ὑποτάσσω) to subordinate; reflexively, to obey
              • They’re lost because they’re passionately following their own way instead of aligning themselves with God.
                • Not just a Hebrew problem but a human problem.

                • Jesus is the Solution: Faith is the challenge

                  • Romans 10:4
                  • zēlos vs telos (Greek: τέλος) “The end”. termination, the limit at which a thing ceases to be. Result. Purpose.
                  • Righteousness = dikaiosynē (Greek: δικαιοσύνη) – in a broad sense: the state of one who is as they ought to be, righteousness, the condition of being acceptable to God
