* This verse is using a monetary term for a relational truth.
* It shows us two principles - a relational principle and a financial one.
* RELATIONALLY - it’s about priority.
* When you make money monthly the number one thing that should have top priority are your debts.
* Before you buy the concert ticket you need to make sure your debts have been paid.
* Paul uses the word “debt” to show us what our priority should be in relationships.
* We have a debt of love toward others.
* Our relationships will change if we see ourselves as “owing” others love because Christ gave us love.
* Since Christ loved us when we were still sinners, we need to “pay it forward” to love others when they are sinners.
* FINANCIALLY - Monetary debt changes relationships.
* It’s a relationship exchange.
* If my brother-in-law borrows 25k from me, he’s now become my servant.
* When I see him at family get togethers what am I now thinking? Where’s my money?
* Paul says, “Don’t do that! Let your only debt be love to others.”
* Romans 14:15 - if you see yourself as a debtor to others then you operate out of love.
* You put your responsibility to others above your right to yourself.
