The gospel is the simple message that God sent His Son into this world to provide a righteousness we could never gain. His perfectly obedient life was offered up on the cross to atone for our sin and robe us in His own righteousness. This is the righteousness that saves. And that’s why Jesus is the only way to be saved. People scoff at the exclusive claims of Christianity. Why wouldn’t God accept good, moral, Buddhists, or Hindu’s or even agnostics? And the answer is simply this – Buddha can’t atone for your sin. Buddha can’t robe you in perfect righteousness. Only Jesus can! Jesus is the only way to be saved because only Jesus came from heaven. Only Jesus took on human flesh in order to bear human sin. Only Jesus perfectly obeyed the law of God in our place. Only Jesus died on the cross to suffer our damnation and rose from the grave for our justification. And the only way to receive this righteousness is by faith in Jesus. This is what the Jews didn’t understand. This is what they refused to accept.
