Listen Later

On May 30th, 2026, we recap the first two rounds of the Charles Schwab Challenge where rain-softened conditions at Colonial led to a two-under cutline and rookie Jordan Smith seizing the 36-hole lead.

CHARLES SCHWAB CHALLENGE LEADERBOARD
  • Rookie Jordan Smith fired back-to-back 65s, including a first-hole eagle, to take the 36-hole lead at ten-under par at a rain-softened Colonial, chased by a nine-under pack featuring Brian Harman and Ryan Gerard.
  • "It is going to be a new experience for us out here leading for the first time so I am excited," said Smith, while Harman added, "I love playing golf in Texas man."
  • Smith celebrated his stellar opening rounds on the PGA Tour by taking a trip to a local Texas rodeo.

EQUIPMENT SHAKE-UPS & CADDIE CAROUSEL
  • The Colonial greens saw massive equipment overhauls, with Ludvig Aberg shockingly moving to a Scotty Cameron mallet, Michael Thorbjornsen switching to a Spider X, and Rickie Fowler missing the cut battling high-MOI mallet struggles.
  • J.J. Spaun switched from a faded LAB Golf DF3 to an OZ1 iHS, admitting, "I found myself kind of resenting my putter."
  • In caddie carousel drama, Dylan Wu hired bagman Austin Gaugert right after Gaugert was fired by Garrick Higgo.

SHOTMAKERS & HEARTBREAKERS
  • The 16th hole provided ultimate thrills with slam-dunk aces from Brandt Snedeker and rookie A.J. Ewart (who shot a career-low 63), while Tom Kim and Alex Smalley found redemption with brilliant bogey-free rounds.
  • "Every day I am trying to build on what I am working on," noted Kim on his swing coach transition, while Smalley said of his PGA Championship bounce-back, "To have no bogeys on the scorecard anywhere is nice."
  • Hideki Matsuyama went viral with an absurd one-handed wedge par save, while Gary Woodland suffered a cruel 30-foot flagstick rejection on the 15th.

Quick Hits

Ryan Gerard on his historic 17-for-17 putting streak inside 15 feet: "I know the stats are probably going to lean more putting but I have been hitting my driver really well" • Stephan Jaeger withdraws from the tournament due to a back injury • The cut line settles at two-under par as the Colonial course begins drying out
