bought abridged by mistake
The problem with audible is that you can't return things. I kept thinking something was missing in these characters. The abridged versions should be marked as well as the unabriged. Won't make that mistake again.
Anyway, interesting view of life and a good narrator.
CAUTION: ABRIDGED
It wasn't until I tried to simultaneously read the print book on my Kindle while listening to this audiobook that I discovered to my chagrin that this is an abridged version. RATS!! Many aspects of the story make FAR better sense in the full book, including what exactly happened on that violet-covered Italian hillside, how Lucy felt about George Emerson then and subsequently, how and why Lucy lied to her family and friends and ended up engaged to Mr. Vyse, Charlotte's overt and covert motivations, and why saintly Mr. Beebe would ever lose interest in and snub Lucy and George. Still, it's gorgeous, and until Juliet Stevenson narrates the unabridged version, this is the one I'll return to again and again. She is flawless, so good that her voice for Miss Bartlett sounds exactly like Maggie Smith from the movie, and her Lucy is better--more appropriate to the character--than that of Helena Bonham Carter. This is ideal listening for bedtime, bath time, a leisurely Sunday morning in bed with your lover, or your regular commute. Even abridged, it's a page-turner. Grade: A. Bechdel test: Pass.
The best reading
Though it is an abridged version, this is the best reading I have found, and it is very entertaining. Juliet Stevenson gives just a perfect reading. She has the gift of playing the parts of each of the characters and it feels more like she is telling the story rather than merely reading it aloud. I almost dropped one star because it is abridged, but in the end I decided it deserved all 5 stars.
Wonderful novel, brilliant reader
It seems as if the one thing everyone in the world can agree upon is that Juliet Stevenson is an absolutely brilliant narrator. No one matches the intelligence of the choices she makes for character voices, line readings, and calm, steady storytelling. She never goes overboard in her delivery. She's supremely tasteful without for an instant being bland.
This is a delightful romantic drawing room comedy of sorts. Forster's insight into his characters puts into the category of "literature" and his characters always surprise. It is a wonderfully entertaining novel on the page, perhaps even more delightful in this audio version.
Fantastic!
I love Forster, and as well done as the movie is, the book is even better.
