Ross Tugade's Path: Human Rights Lawyer

Listen Later

Atty. Ross Tugade is a senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines, teaching courses on legal method and ethics. Having worked in the Commission on Human Rights for 3 years and currently serving as a legal analyst for an international NGO called Partners in Justice International, she has vast experience in human rights work from both the local and global scenes.

She joins the Project Offbeat podcast to discuss the unconventional (and dangerous) career of a human rights worker, Philippine drug war victim Kian delos Santos, the Anti-Terrorism Law, and the demonization of human rights in recent years.

In the episode, Atty. Ross also shares the most basic human rights that you may have but may not necessarily be aware of and provides tips on how to prioritize human dignity in a highly capitalistic and profit-centered world.

List of questions include:

  • What are human rights?
  • What are rights we have that we may be unaware of?
  • What does it mean to value human dignity over profits?
  • What are the different careers involving human rights?
  • How difficult is it to be a human rights worker in Philippines?
  • Pros and cons of doing this career
  • What's your thoughts on the case of Kian delos Santos?
  • What provisions in the Anti-Terrorism law worry you the most?
