Part 2 of our conversation with psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Akira Kugaya begins with a question once asked at one of his lectures:
“What can we do to prevent depression?”
From resilience, optimism, sleep, and knowing when to seek help, our conversation moves toward the idea of the mind as something soft and undefined—“like cotton candy”—and what it means to turn our attention inward rather than constantly looking outward for approval.

Rotary Cafe’s first interview features Dr. Akira Kugaya, MD, PhD, a physician with extensive experience in psychiatry and neuroscience in both Japan and the United States.
“What kind of moments make you feel comfortable or truly happy?”
From there, we explore his spontaneous “morning journeys,” the freedom that comes from letting go of control, and the invisible “armor” we may wear to protect ourselves.

“Should I volunteer at my child’s school?”
It’s a common question for parents in the U.S.
In this episode, I share what I learned from seeing children in their world at school.
Living in the present while still having a vision for the future. They may seem like opposite ideas, but perhaps they are more connected than we think. In this episode, I reflect on vision—for children, for adults, and even during seasons of life filled with “have to’s.”Not to decide the future, but to help us choose our next step, right here and now.
Rejoice Always.
While juggling motherhood, work, and college, a teacher shared these simple words with me at a time when I had almost forgotten to find joy in my everyday life.
Decades later, “Rejoice Always” is still a phrase that comes back to me whenever I need it.
40 Bucks。
In this first episode, I share why I started Rotary Cafe and how a small change in perspective can affect our lives.
Instead of thinking, “I only have 20 minutes left,” what happens when we think, “I still have 20 minutes”?
