RTBWTV Podcast Episode 11 - Canadians to the rescue!

Listen Later

In this episode, David Newell and Guy Morgan brave the extreme heatwave and hail Canada's role in changing the face of British television in the late 1950's and 60's. Here we concentrate on three individuals, Drama producer Sydney Newman who created both The Avengers for ABC TV and Doctor Who for the BBC but also pioneered Armchair Theatre and The Wednesday Play, Harry W Junkin - script supervisor and writer for The Saint and other ITC shows plus actor turned presenter Bernard Braden who shaped the topical comedy/consumer format on both ITV and the BBC.
We use clips from a CBC interview with Sydney Newman in the late 60s which is available in full on YouTube at:

And there are ghostly manifestations of Johnny Dankworth's original Avengers' theme and Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire's original 1963 Doctor Who theme.
Plus national anthem O Canada and Blame Canada (from South Park) also make an appearance.
