Rugby Union, League, And The Comeback. | Jake Spellacy

Listen Later

This week on Almost Pro, we’re joined by Laura’s brother, Jake Spellacy.

Jake’s journey through rugby has taken a few turns. He grew up playing rugby league, moved into rugby union through school, and like a lot of athletes, had his sights set on where the game could take him.

But things didn’t go to plan.

A serious spear tackle left him without feeling in his legs for hours, followed by ongoing spinal issues, a broken wrist, COVID impacting his final school season, and later a torn pec and nerve damage during club rugby.

At a few points, he thought he was done with the game.

Instead, he’s found his way back through rugby league.

Now playing in Brisbane’s open competitions and pushing toward Opens 1, Jake’s rebuilding his body, his fitness, and his confidence in the game — while balancing uni, work, and everything that comes with it.

This episode is about what it actually looks like to keep going in sport when things don’t go to plan, and how sometimes the path forward isn’t the one you expected.
