There are two kinds of parents. One makes rules. The other gives grace.
When you communicate with your teen, do you say stuff like “Hey, it’s my way or the highway!” Or, “You’ll do it because I said so?” Sounds like you might be a rule-enforcer.
On the other hand, being a grace-giver means this: Tell your son the reason behind a rule. Be clear ahead of time about the consequences—don’t make them up on the spot. And be willing to give a little freedom in the areas that aren’t worth the battle.
Ready to be a grace-giver? It’s time to ditch the legalistic jargon, and communicate our rules in a way that trains and guides our teens.
Mom, dad, take a deep breath. Give ‘em some grace.
