  • We used to be friends: St. John’s vs Rutgers, Gavitt Games

St. John’s vs Rutgers, a former Big East conference game and perhaps a rivalry, returns as part of this week’s Gavitt Games between the Big East and the Big Ten. It may not be bigger than Duke/ UNC or even Harvard/ Yale, but the Epic Battle will be discussed with our favorite Rutgers people — On the Banks manager Aaron Breitman and Dave White, who used to manage the site.

We shoot some breeze about hoops, Veronica Mars, and also:

    5:30 – talking undefeated Rutgers

9:30 – the changes in Rutgers now that Corey Sanders has moved on
20:00 – will St. John’s extend the rotation for this game?
26:00 – is this what we expected going into the season?
33:00 – Rutgers defense, zone, lockdown defender
The Quinnipiac stars meet on the court for the first time.
42:00 – gut feelings about St. John’s, Rutgers for the season

  • Hype train, featuring Heron & Ponds

The Rumble in the Garden podcast has returned with a new episode; Norman has guest Joseph Nardone on to muse about the NCAA, the effects of the return of Shamorie Ponds and the transfer of Mustapha Heron to St. John’s, and the sudden burst of Red Storm preseason hype — with real, unvarnished talk the whole way.

    This week:

    • Recapping the wild offseason for St. John’s
    • The return of Shamorie Ponds and where his game could land him (with diversions about Marcus Hatten, Omar Cook, Matthew Dellavedova, and not making the NBA)
    • Mustapha Heron trying to get a waiver to play immediately (where we talk about the NCAA’s likely long time frame, and what is the “right” thing for this situation)
    • The St. John’s hype train
    • Listener question on playing time
    • Listener question on the team’s ceiling (dependent on defense)
    • Tariq Owens
    • Listener question on favorite Big East player of the 2000s
    • Listener question on the high number of transfers out of the St. John’s program
