Listen Later

Welcome to Valentine’s edition of a special two part Valentine’s podcast with Tone Thyne. You actually know his work from Disney animation, and as the Producer of Wonder Pets, as creator of Napkin Man and other universally loved original content. You even know his face as the model for Disney’s Toy Story hero, Woody. So, here is your chance to get to know the man behind the success. Vice President of Creative at FableVision, an educational media developer and production studio, Tone is a Television Director, Writer, Animator, Producer, Show-runner, and a role model for how to get comfortable with failure, moving past the first NO, the second rejection, the third hurdle and finding the way to YES!

In this engaging conversation, Tone offers a master class on how to put yourself into the path of luck, despite setbacks, door slams and missteps. Tone, above all else, is a charismatic storyteller with love at the center of his life. In Part I: Run to the Roar, Tone shares the challenges of his early career, in what becomes an instructive optimist’s guide to life, career and love. His audacity is both inspiring and somehow accessible. He explains the origin of his friendship with failure and the willpower to keep looking for the next right answer.

Part One highlights include:

“The first assignment was to make a flipbook. And I realized at that very moment that I got to have some sort of a god complex, because when I created this life, I was just completely smitten with the art form. And I thought, wow, I can actually make these little doodles dance and come to life. And I declared animation my major right then and there.”

“It becomes a challenge, you know - like, okay, they said no. I mean, I make a living right now trying to sell original content to the broadcasters. And, there's a million of them out there. When one of them says no, then… that's great. I don't really start until I get a no. And then it's like, okay, Games On. Somebody just said no. Now, how do we get somebody to say yes?”

“I had this teacher in eighth grade, and she used to write these quotes up on the board. Every day, It was our job to come into class and write down into our notebook the quote that she had written up on the board. I don't remember any of them, except one, which was: Run to the Roar. And, and she explained the quotes she says, “When you're afraid of something, don't run away from it run toward it.”
