When out gas tank is low we know because there is a meter on our dashboard that monitors the level of gas in our vehicle at all times. The gas light notifies us that we are low on gas and need to go to the gas station to replenish what we have used. You can deplete your tank completely but that put you at risk of you car cutting off in traffic. The same goes for us spiritually.
