Running your own event - a story worth listening to

Listen Later

In this episode, Julie would like to tell you a story about a particular episode that took place back in 2015, when she decided to set up a monthly business talk and workshop event. But as Julie soon discovered, even the best intentions can go awry...

For anyone who’s thinking about setting up a networking event, this episode will be an invaluable guide on how to stage such events, the mindset you need, and the many pitfalls and misconceptions to avoid.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • After coming up with an initial plan to begin a monthly meeting and workshop event, Julie invested time, money and resources into making the event as successful as possible. Hopes were high, as initial interest was huge.
  • Apart from a regular contingent of around six people, no one came to the events. This mean that only £90 a month in ticket sales were incoming, which was far outweighed by the running costs.
  • Julie now realises that she wasn’t advertising or marketing the events effectively. Because of the value she personally saw in the events, Julie felt that people would naturally find their way to these events without any marketing.
  • Emotion plays a big part in the decisions we make and the things that we do. Julie’s event experience was born out of her own sadness at losing her father, and perpetuated through the running and dissolution of the events themselves.

BEST MOMENTS

’None of us are experts in every field’

‘We all learn and we fail forward, remember that!’

‘I had created it out of sadness’

‘Emotion plays a big part in the decisions we make’

‘I think there may have been an ego thing going on there, as well'

I started my career within the accountancy profession, moving on into auditing, then Learning & Development where I have spent over 30 years.

In 2011 I threw everything up in the air and became a property investor via forex, trading and learning how to build websites & internet market whilst walking on fire 😊

I have worked with over 20,000 Leaders at every level of Management and Leadership for over 30+ years. In the latter years working with CEOs, SMTs, boards of trustees & Entrepreneurs.

I have worked with the public, the private and the entrepreneurial sectors of the market. The Leadership messages are the same across the sectors – the application may be different but all are Business’ where Conscious and Principled Leadership reaps rewards for all parties concerned.

I work with the human element of Business and my passion is enabling others to be the best they can be through providing them with the information they need to be more effective than they currently are. Unleashing potential and providing knowledge enabling the best decisions to be made for the Business, the Employee, the Leader (themselves) their families and the greater social economy.

I love travel, sunshine, smiley people, intelligent conversation, laughter, learning, networking, supporting others, property as a business, investigating ‘stuff’ problem solving, asking questions that make people think, creating aha moments, gardening and flowers and being outside.
