Russia plans to leave International Space Station by 2020, official says

Russia said it does not plan to use the International Space Station beyond 2020, casting a shadow on U.S. plans to continue cooperation with the country and extend the life of the orbiting laboratory until at least 2024.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin(드미트리 로고진) told reporters that Russia is looking to redirect its attention to other projects after 2020. His comments come as tensions mount over U.S. sanctions on Russia for its role in the crisis in Ukraine.

러시아의 드미트리 로고진 부총리는 2020년 이후에는 러시아가 더 이상 국제 우주정거장을 사용하지 않을 것이며 그럼으로써 미국 역시 이 궤도상의 우주 실험실을 사용하지 못하도록 하는 효과가 있을 것이라고 밝혔다.

이 성명서는 우크라이나 위기로 미-러 갈등과 긴장이 최고조에 달하고 미국이 러시아 추가 제재를 발표한 시점에 나온 것이어서 주목된다.

로고진 부총리는 우주정거장 문제와 현 긴장 사태를 직접 연관시키지는 않았지만 "미국처럼 모든 것을 정치화하는 믿을 수 없는 나라를 파트너로 중요한 첨단 기술 프로젝트를 함께 계속시켜 나간다는 것은 러시아로서는 정말 경악스러운 일"이라고 논평했다. 현재는 미국의 우주 셔틀비행이 모두 끝났기 때문에 ISS로 왕복하는 모든 나라의 우주인들이 사용하는 교통수단은 러시아의 소유즈 우주선 밖에 없는 상황이다.
