Ruth Reffkin (deel 2): activist, trotse moeder, idealist, makelaar

[English text below] In het tweede deel van ons gesprek met Ruth Reffkin vertelt de 77-jarige New Yorkse makelaar hoe het bemiddelen in de huizenmarkt haast als een heilige bezigheid aanvoelt. Een huis kopen is een enorme financiële beslissing die met zorgvuldigheid moet worden begeleid. Dus toen haar succesvolle zoon Robert de mission statement van zijn bedrijf Compass onthulde, to help everyone find their place in the world, kreeg ze tranen in haar ogen.

Reffkin werkt voor haar zoons bedrijf dat huizenkopers en -verkopers met online technologie verbindt en waarvoor hij alleen maar ‘aardige mensen’ aanneemt. Ze is trots op haar zoon maar maakt zich zorgen over de staat van post Trump Amerika. ‘Ontevreden mensenmenigtes op stang jagen met haat voor anderen en de vrees dat ze van alles wordt afgenomen; dat is de grootste angst in mijn leven.’

In the second part of our conversation with Ruth Reffkin, the seventy-seven-year-old New York real estate agent explains how brokering the housing market feels almost like a sacred activity. Buying a home is a huge financial decision that needs to be guided with care. So when her successful son Robert unveiled the mission statement of his company Compass, 'to help everyone find their place in the world', she got tears in her eyes.

Reffkin works for her son's company that connects home buyers and sellers with online technology and for which he only hires "nice people." She is proud of her son but worried about the state of post Trump America. “To incite disgruntled crowds with hatred of others and the fear of being taken away from everything; that is the biggest fear of my life.”
