Besides winning the toughest-fought and most hostile presidential race in the history of American politics up to the present day, Rutherford B. Hayes became America’s 19th president, and he was one known for keeping his promises.

For instance, Hayes announced in advance that he would only serve one term, and he did.  He also promised to “clean up” the White House by banning smoking, alcoholic beverages, dancing, and card playing – although his wife received most of the credit, becoming “Lemonade Lucy,” in the process.

Oh, and, I just remembered, and I hope I don’t get this wrong, but there’s a story somewhere about a diplomat – or someone – during the Hayes administration, when asked, “What was dinner like at the White House,” who responded simply, “The water flowed like wine.”
