Rwanda accuses DRC Congo of deploying war equipment along common border

Listen Later

Rwanda has warned it will take action to address any cross border threats to it's national security, claiming that the Democratic Republic of Congo is deploying new military equipment along their shared frontier.

In the context of increasingly bellicose statements by DRC civilians and military leaders, the DRC is deploying new hardware capabilities and foreign mercenaries in the common border area, " said Rwanda in a statement issued on Tuesday night.

"Given Rwanda's legitimate security concerns, defensive and preventive mechanisms have accordingly been reinforced to guard against violations of our airspace and borders," said Rwanda, adding, " These contingencies are ready to act to prevent any cross-border threat, proportionately to its magnitude, origin, and nature.

The development comes amid intense fighting between M23 rebels, who are reportedly backed by Rwanda, and DRC's forces in North Kivu, Eastern Congo.

Kinshasa purchased attack drones from china to support its war planes in the conflict with the M23 rebels.

Kigali says the M23 rebellion is an internal matter for the DRC to resolve.

The international community has recently criticized Rwanda harshly for assisting the M23 rebels, who are now accused of egregious human rights abuses and destabilizing North Kivu.

Last week, the U.S requested Rwanda to remove its troops from DR Congo where they were reportedly supporting the M23 insurgency.

While Rwanda described the U.S statement on 22 February 2023 as "positive" and echoing the regional decisions related to hate speech and ethnic violence, the return of refugees, and the disarming and repatriation of the FDLR, it said the united states "appears consistently out of step with the decisions of the regional processes, and risks undermining them, by continuing to endorse the DRC Government's false narrative blaming Rwanda for the crisis"

Rwanda further said, : the repeated failure by the international community to condemn the DRC Government for the preservation of the FDLR encourages DRC to continue arming and fighting alongside the genocidal militia, which has conducted cross-border attacks in Rwanda while embedded with the Congolese army (FARDC)

This constitutes a direct serious threat to Rwanda security. The FDLR is not a benign or inconsequential force, and the ultimate goal of it's partnership with FARDC is to attack Rwanda.
