S01 E08 - Eating Our Own

Listen Later

We pride ourselves on being the best at the basics and letting our performance speak for itself.  But have we taken this maxim too far?  It's not like we are Navy SEALs with book deals, movies, and action figures.  Is it a crime for a Green Beret to discuss his experience, his work (not operational details), his weaknesses, and failures?  Within our community, we are our worst critics, and if we smell blood in the water we are quick to pounce and pillory the offending party.

This aspect of our community is both a strength and a weakness.  Policing our own is necessary to keep us focused and in-line with our mission and core values, it helps us groom the next generation of Green Berets and pass on the tradition.  On the other end of the spectrum, we have embraced a hyper-vigilance to not be vocal Green Berets under any circumstances, even when speaking up and staking our claim within the SOF community is the best thing we can do for the community and society as a whole.  Especially as the combat years wind down, do our mission focus and code of silence create adversaries for our war-weary brethren as opposed to advocates who are trained to notice even the most minor changes in a person's ability and disposition.

What is an acceptable level of voice and exposure of a Green Beret's capability to society at large? If we are truly as vulnerable as a society as current events indicate, isn't it time for Green Berets to speak up and employ their professional acumen to benefit society?  If we did, we run the risk of running afoul of our community.

In this episode, we bring on a special guest, Jeff Adamac from Changing Hearts & Minds Podcast into the G-Base and discuss these issues.  This is a genuine team room conversation ranging from the benefits of policing our own to the stigma and taboo of discussing PTSD and the effects of war within our community.  We think you will get a lot out of this discussion and insights into how Green Berets think and operate.  And as usual, D delivers a hilarious story to drive the point home.
