It is narrated in the traditions of the Prophet (s) that Imam Mehdi (a) shall be identical in appearance to Muhammad (s). It is also narrated that Imam Mehdi (a)'s name shall coincide with the name of the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) revealed to his companions the physical appearance and characteristics of Imam Mehdi (a) which cemented the belief in their hearts that it shall be Muhammad (s) who shall return as Imam Mehdi (a) in the future.
