Femme Forward: Forwarding females to shape the future

S1 E2: How to shape social entrepreneurship in emerging countries w/ Nurfarini Daing

Listen Later

Malaysia has made considerable progress but remains a middle-income country and was struggling to achieve its aspiration of becoming a high-income nation by 2020. To jump-start the effort, Malaysia announced in January 2010 its Government Transformation Programme (GTP), aimed at delivering big results fast in the public services that were most important to the people.

There is an increasing number of supporting intermediaries such as myHarapan, iM4U, Impact Hub, Tandemic, Social Enterprise Alliance and local universities are actively creating awareness on social enterprise and supporting the community with various social entrepreneurship activities. Nevertheless, only 0.02% of Malaysians are working in social enterprises in comparison to 1.5% of China’s working population is working in social enterprises. Therefore, integrated efforts from various agencies are needed to educate the public and the community on the importance and potential of the social enterprise sector in promoting national sustainable socio-economic development.

With my guest Nurfarini Daing (Nini), CEO of myHarapan, we speak about the challenges to shape social entrepreneurship in Malaysia and the impact myHarapan is able to have on women's well-being. Nini shares her recommendations on what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur with a social mission and what policies are needed to unlock the potential in young entrepreneurs.

Listen to this great episode to get unique insights into a rising sector in Malaysia and be prepared to be inspired when Nini shares some of her wisdom from running a company, being a mother and teacher. Enjoy!

With best wishes,
