Time Pieces History

[S1, E2] The London Underground

Listen Later

We look at the origins of the London Underground, the abandoned tube stations and London's hidden rivers.

Gudrun explains how the Tube was born out of necessity to deal with an over-congested city, and how The Metropolitan Railway had delay construction during the Crimean War.

She shares what it was like to experience the Underground on its first day, how some of the stations have been abandoned since it opened in 1863, and the forgotten rivers that run below the network.
