S1 Ep. 7 Can I Touch Your ... ?

Listen Later

In this episode of All1nclusive Tracy and Meenal discuss the serious repercussions of the Danish birth control scandal.  We all know that birth control is a sensitive topic. But what happens when it's used as a tool to control an entire population? That's the shocking story they share about when Inuit Greenlanders as young as 13 were fitted with contraceptive IUDs without their families' consent in the late 60's. This of course raises a complex series of legal and ethical questions. Here Tracy and Meenal debate whether this was a form of genocide.

They talk about the lasting impact for generations, the trail of cultural trauma that can last for decades, and how it is still relevant today. They look for comparisons of other cultural traumas in history such as the stolen generations of first nations peoples in Australia and the English occupation of India.

In cheerier news Tracy and Meenal praise a group of dads who are taking parenting to the next level. They're called 'Dope Black Dads' and they're changing the the game for Black Father's all over the world. 'Dope Black Dads' is a UK based movement started by UK black dad Marvin Harrison.  Harrison inspired a global movement when he started a WhatsApp group for Black Fathers to share their experiences of black parenting and masculinity in the modern world. The group has grown exponentially, with members from all over the world sharing their own stories of wisdom with other black fathers.  Now Marvin has a Podcast Black "Dope Black Dads" about the joys and challenges of black fatherhood and is releasing his first Children's book in 2023 titled "I Love Me".

In this weeks "What would YOU do?"  Tracy and Meenal discuss one of the most common questions posed to Black women ( and some black men) "Can I touch your hair?" Have you ever been curious about what it would be like to touch a Black woman's hair? Appropriate or not? A curious innocent question or question that cultivates the concept of otherness? Tracy shares her personal experiences with this question and the two have a good laugh about it.
