S1 Ep. 9 Big Hair Don't Care!

Listen Later

Meenal shares a story that highlight's quite a common and more accepted form of "ism" in ageing Australia, Ageism. With the announcement of the 60 something radio presenter Fran Kelly's appointment as presenter of a new ABC talk show, Frankly, the ABC was the target of criticisms suggesting that older people shouldn't be getting new gigs. They discuss how Ageism is unfortunately quite prevalent in our society, and especially noticeable when it comes to women, when you consider the number of older men that appear on our screens today.

In another story that warms the heart, there's praise for UK's Samantha Williams' ground breaking work supporting multiculturalism. In 2016 this phenomenal lady started a movement of multicultural book carnivals to bring inclusive reading materials into schools. Samantha now sells the books online @bookloveandbeyond, promoting multiculturalism all over the globe.  Tracy and Meenal also learn a new acronym BAME that is short for saying Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic.

In this weeks "What would YOU do?" Tracy and Meenal discuss what it means to them, to hear someone say 'I don't see colour' and whether or not it's a good thing. Is this a statement of solidarity against racism, or a denial of people's identity and experience of discrimination?

They also talk about when it is ok to ask the question, where are you from? Have you ever asked someone this question? If so, what prompted the question? For some people it's an innocuous question. A way to make small talk. But for others, it's a loaded question. Is it ok to ask? Tracy and Meenal share their own experiences and how they feel about being asked, Where are you from?
