"Masking" or "camouflaging" in the Autism community is often done out of necessity, to fit in to a world not designed for us. It can begin in childhood, and may be done consciously or subconsciously. It is often forced on us by society, and then as adults we are told we should be strong, proud ND individuals... In reality, many of us struggle with our identity, to un-mask; a strong loss of self develops from this trauma...
