S13E5: The Story of Prophet Sulaiman and the Magic Craft: Understanding Surah Al-Baqrah, Verse 102
After these two angels finished their job, they returned back to their place in heaven towards Allah SWT. But people started to develop this kind of knowledge which related to the magic craft. Satan helped them until the time of Prophet Sulaiman AS. When he died, the Satan (Shaytan) - Iblis, had a trick in his mind. He wrote down some of these magic formulas on a piece of paper and put it under the throne of Sulaiman.
After the death of Prophet Sulaiman, he took the form of a human and in front of the people, he took out this paper, scroll from under the throne of Sulaiman and he opened it and he told the people, look, that these were the magic formulae through which Sulaiman AS used to control you. Sulaiman was not a prophet, he was a magician.
He used all this magic craft work to do all his miracles and that was not a real miracle. And many people believe in that and he was able to misguide people regarding this. So that's why Allah started the verse 102 of Surah Al-Baqrah:
وَاتَّبَعُوۡا مَا تَتۡلُوا الشَّيٰطِيۡنُ عَلٰى مُلۡكِ سُلَيۡمٰنَۚ وَمَا کَفَرَ سُلَيۡمٰنُ وَلٰـكِنَّ الشَّيٰـطِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا يُعَلِّمُوۡنَ النَّاسَ السِّحۡرَ وَمَآ اُنۡزِلَ عَلَى الۡمَلَـکَيۡنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوۡتَ وَمَارُوۡتَؕ
“And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt.”
That is Iblis and his people when they claim that Sulaiman was following magic and he was a clever magician. That's how he was able to do all these miracles and he was not a prophet. And people followed him.
The followers of Sulaiman, they follow the shaytan, what taba'u matatlu shayateeni ale mulki Sulaiman and Allah here wants to exonerate Sulaiman.
Allah said, “wa ma kafara Sulaiman” i.e. Sulaiman was truly a prophet and didn’t do Kufr, “wa lakinna shayateena kafara,” but the Iblis and his helpers, they are the kuffar and anyone who believes in him.
Allah said, “Yo-allimoun an nasa al-sah,” those shayateen, they are the one who teach the people this magic,
Allah said, “wa ma onzil al-alal malakain,” And they teach people that kind of knowledge which has been many years before, has been descended to the earth and taught by Harut and Marut.
