Abuse is a pattern of power and control used to intimidate, manipulate, or harm someone. It doesn't always leave physical marks and can affect anyone regardless of age or gender. Recognizing it early is the first step toward safety and support.

Common Warning Signs of Abuse

• Emotional & Psychological: Constant put-downs, screaming, blaming you for their actions, excessive jealousy, or making you feel as though you are losing your mind (gaslighting).
• Isolation: Stopping you from seeing friends or family, guilt-tripping you for spending time with others, or closely tracking your whereabouts.
• Financial: Taking your money, controlling access to bank accounts, or preventing you from working or going to school.
• Physical & Sexual: Slapping, hitting, pushing, restraining you, or pressuring/forcing you into unwanted sexual acts.
• Coercion & Threats: Threatening to hurt you, your children, or pets, destroying your personal property, or threatening self-harm to keep you from leaving.

How to Get Help and Resources

• Immediate Danger: If you are in immediate physical danger, call 911 or contact local law enforcement right away.
• National Domestic Violence Hotline: For confidential, 24/7 support, call 1-800-799-SAFE, text START to 88788, or chat online through The Hotline.
• General Safety Planning: For tailored safety planning tools and directories of local programs, utilize resources like DomesticShelters.org or WomensLaw.org.
